Dario van Vree (1979 - Amsterdam) studied Animation at the Royal Academy of Arts in Gent, Belgium. After graduating cum laude in 2006 he returned to Amsterdam, working as an animation director, creator and illustrator. Dario is an active member of the animation scene, combining teaching, talent-development and event-organizing with running his animation studio / production company Studio Pupil and working freelance.
His work is characterized by societal themes, clear-cut design, character performance and comedy.
His latest personal work is the 30-minute animated shortfilm ‘I’m Perfectly Fine’, based on the graphic novel ‘Burnout Diary’ by Dutch comic artist Maaike Hartjes. The film was produced over a period of 4 years between 2019-2023 in the Netherlands and Belgium. It premiered at the Netherlands Film festival in september 2023.
Clients include: HEMA, Coca-Cola, ING, Rabobank, Het Parool, VPRO, NTR, EO, BNN, HUMAN, Psychologie Magazine, KesselsKramer, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Sesame Street, Submarine, amongst many others.

In 2016 Dario founded Studio Pupil, an Amsterdam-based animation studio & production company, along with director Johan Klungel and producer Tünde Vollenbroek.
Studio Pupil specializes in commissioned animation, independent shorts and series. Their work is clear and entertaining, possibly hilarious and always full of character.
Dario was co-founder, creative director and art director/illustrator for the KLIK Amsterdam Animation Festival from 2007 to 2012.
In 2019 KLIK Amsterdam and the Holland Animation Film Festival merged into KABOOM Festival.
Until 2022 Dario was active for the festival as chairman and member of the board.
Dario is teacher at the animation departement of the Willem De Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and Artez University of the Arts in Zwolle, where he teaches animation & direction.
